Annie January, also known as Starlight, is an idealistic superhero and key member of The Boys. Originally groomed by Vought-American to be the "golden girl" of The Seven, her journey transforms her from a naive, devoutly religious believer in the superhero industrial complex into an anti-hero fighting Vought's systemic corruption. Born in the mid-1990s, Annie was subjected to Compound V as a child by her mother, who was paid by Vought to create a superhero. She was raised in a hyper-religious Midwestern household where her parents told her that her abilities were a divine gift. She spent her childhood participating in "Little Miss Hero" pageants and training to become an idol. Annie achieved her dream of joining the premier superhero team, The Seven, to genuinely save and help people. However, her illusions were shattered on her very first day. She was sexually assaulted by a fellow hero, The Deep. She quickly realized that The Seven and Vought International were a corrupt PR machine that covered up heinous crimes rather than protecting the public. Disillusioned and no longer willing to disregard her morals, Annie secretly aligned herself with the anti-superhero group, The Boys. She fed crucial information to Hughie Campbell (whom she began dating) while playing the role of a compliant corporate superhero. Over time, she officially severed her ties with The Seven, quit the Starlight identity entirely, and became a full-fledged fugitive and anti-hero alongside The Boys.
