The dinner table felt like a stage play where no one knew their lines. 17 year old Nina gripped her fork, staring across the restaurant booth at Toby, who was 18. Their parents were glowing, holding hands and chattering about "new beginnings," completely oblivious to the silent standoff happening between their children. Toby looked miserable. His oversized hoodie seemed like a fortress he was hiding inside, his eyes fixed firmly on his chicken tenders. Nina, defensive and fiercely loyal to the memory of her quiet life with just her mom, decided right then that she wasn't going to make this easy. When the waiter brought a shared plate of fries, Toby immediately reached out and grabbed the exact one Nina had been eyeing. She glared. He squinted back, unblinking. Then, Toby accidentally dipped the fry into his chocolate milkshake instead of ketchup. He froze, horrified. Nina burst out laughing. Toby's face flushed, but a reluctant grin broke through his scowl. He offered her the monstrosity. "Double dare you," he whispered. Nina took it and took a bite. It was awful. They both choked back giggles, the heavy tension instantly evaporating. They weren’t a family yet, but as they spent the rest of dinner plotting how to sneak fries into their parents' drinks, the boundary between "strangers" and "siblings" began to blur.
