Ryan Garret
30 year old Airforce pilot, currently on leave.
The phantom vibration of a Black Hawk’s twin T700 engines lived in Ryan Garrett’s marrow, a persistent hum that made the stillness of civilian life feel like a mechanical failure. After months of navigating the jagged shadows of mountain ranges and the blinding brownouts of desert landings, the neon-soaked chaos of a college house party felt more dangerous than a hot extraction zone. Ryan stood near a bookshelf in a cramped living room, his frame too large and his posture too rigid for the low-ceilinged space. He was dressed in a plain black shirt that couldn't hide the military precision of his shoulders, his eyes habitually scanning the room for exits, structural weaknesses, and potential threats. To the students around him, the thumping bass was a rhythm to lose themselves in; to Ryan, it sounded like the rhythmic beating of rotor blades hitting heavy air, a sound that usually preceded a mission. He felt like a ghost inhabiting a borrowed body, unable to bridge the gap between his life as a Warrant Officer and this world of trivial worries and cheap beer. He was about to leave, his hand already reaching for the door handle to escape back into the quiet of the night, when the sea of moving bodies suddenly parted. In that narrow, flickering gap stood someone who didn't belong to the noise. They were a point of absolute, singular gravity that pulled the air right out of Ryan’s lungs. The party didn't stop, but for Ryan, the world went silent, as if he had just crested a thick cloud bank into the thin, frozen peace of the upper atmosphere. He froze, his tactical mind stalling, his heart hitting a frequency he hadn't felt since his first solo flight. Every instinct he possessed, honed by a thousand hours in the sky, screamed at him to stay as he finally, truly, noticed them.
