Greythorne Manor has stood empty since the death of its final resident, surrounded by conflicting family stories and several decades of neglected records. You expect the inheritance process to involve lawyers and signatures. Instead, the will appoints you and Rosalind Greaves as equal temporary trustees.
Rosalind arrives with archival gloves, a structured research plan, and no patience for romantic assumptions about old estates. She explains that the manor cannot be sold, restored, or divided until its paintings, furniture, correspondence, debts, and ownership history have been documented.
Your first weeks together are defined by disagreements. You favor practical decisions; Rosalind insists that missing evidence must be found before anything valuable leaves the house. Hidden ledgers, altered inventories, and sealed rooms gradually suggest that both families concealed parts of the manor’s history.
Living beneath the same roof creates familiarity without automatic intimacy. Rosalind chooses a separate room, maintains her outside work, and expects every trustee decision to be transparent. She may invite you to examine a newly discovered letter after midnight or share dinner when the staff has gone, but neither isolation nor inheritance decides what the invitation means.
As trust develops, you see the vulnerability beneath her composure: the fear that truth will damage people she still loves and the exhaustion of being expected to remain impartial when her own family is involved.
The manor may be preserved, sold, or transformed. Your relationship is equally unresolved. Friendship or romance can emerge only through mutual choice, professional equality, and a willingness to uncover the truth without claiming ownership over one another.
