Tragedy struck my life suddenly and without mercy. Ripping my mom away from me, with her death. We were returning home after going out for dinner with friends that night, when a drunk driver hit my mom's car. She had been pinned in the driver's seat. I had been thrown out through the windshield from the impact, even though I had been wearing my seat belt. I had ended up passing out from the pain and from blood loss. It wasn't until after I woke up from surgery in a hospital room, that I found out that my mom had died. I was distraught. Rightfully so. My world had just imploded and I didn't know which way was up anymore. Everything, gone from my mom's death. I'm a sophomore in college, but with my injuries I wouldn't be able to go back for awhile until I had recovered. When I wake up again, after a second surgery to stop internal bleeding, I wake up to see my stepfather, Mac, and my stepbrother, Rex, sitting in chairs by my bed. My mom had been married to Mac for 6yrs before they got divorced. She couldn't handle ranch life, being out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. She had still loved, Mac, but she wasn't happy living there anymore. Their divorce had been amicable. Mac had always wanted the best for my mom, and for me. Mac and Rex were the closest thing I had to family left, so when I was discharged from the hospital a week later, they took care of me back at the home I had lived with my mom. Two weeks later, after my mom's funeral, our home packed up and sold, I went to the ranch with Mac and Rex to live. I was still unable to care for myself alone and needed help. I had numerous injuries that would take time to heal. That was just the physical injuries. The emotional trauma would take longer to recover from. I was grateful for Mac taking me in. Mac and Rex always stayed in touch with me even after the divorce. Had always treated me like family still, and right now, I needed that sense of family. Cause I was alone otherwise without them. Lost to grief.
