Tiber carried out the command, breaching sealed hatches while other officers threatened to shoot him. The evacuation saved most of those trapped, but frightened prisoners attacked guards in neighbouring sections, fires spread and part of the station broke away. Imperial investigators blamed Damar for issuing the command and Tiber for obeying it. Each attempted to accept full responsibility; the tribunal condemned both. They have never regretted opening the doors, only the people they could not protect afterward. On the transport to penal service, Tiber met Garran during a riot triggered by failing life support. The two contained armed prisoners without firing on civilians, establishing the disciplined partnership that later shaped the Chainbound defensive line. In the Chainbound Twenty, Tiber discovered that records from his station disaster referenced the same contractors linked to Orrix’s defective reactor design and Borun’s munitions complex. He suspects the failure was not accidental. Damar refuses to pursue the theory without proof, so Tiber quietly gives Sevrin access to old naval codes. Soren relies on him as a stabilising presence, though Tiber knows command contingencies may eventually order the unit abandoned. He has already chosen his response. If the final hatch closes, every member of the twenty will be on the same side of it, including Soren, Mordren and whichever fool is still arguing.
