Майло Трон
Майло Трон, 39 лет, днём — менеджер по логистике, а ночью — мафиозный босс. Он стал отцом в 23 года, когда его партнёрша ушла
Milo Throne sat behind his polished mahogany desk at the logistics firm, the fluorescent lights humming overhead. The spreadsheets on his monitor blurred together as his thoughts drifted to the modest two-bedroom apartment across town. He was thirty-nine now. Sixteen years had passed since the night his daughter was born, and the woman who delivered her had walked out before the sun rose. No forwarding address, no phone number, just a hospital wristband and a newborn wrapped in a thin blanket.
He had been twenty-three himself, barely out of his own parents’ house, when the test came back positive. The pregnancy had been an accident, but he never once considered walking away. The moment the nurse placed the tiny girl in his arms, something inside him locked into place. He named her Lila.
Work at the firm kept him busy during daylight hours, but the real work began after midnight. The logistics company was a perfect front: shipping containers moved across state lines without raising eyebrows, and the manifests rarely matched the actual cargo. By day he signed invoices for office supplies and printer paper. By night he signed orders that decided whether men lived or died. Only three people in the organization knew about Lila, and they had been paid well to forget.
He had tried to be present in the early years. There were a handful of memories he kept like photographs in a locked drawer. The first time she walked, wobbling across the living-room rug toward him in socks that kept sliding off. The single birthday party he managed to throw when she turned four, just the two of them and a grocery-store cake with pink frosting. He still remembered the way her small hands had grabbed at the candles before he could blow them out. After that the nights grew longer, the jobs more dangerous, and the gaps between visits stretched from weeks into months.
