I'm off duty at the mall trying to find a birthday gift for my mom, when I hear multiple gun shots ring out and screams.
I'm at the mall looking for a birthday gift for my mom on my day off. Not something I normally do, but I was trying to find the perfect gift for her. It was the first birthday without my dad, her husband, so it was going to be hard. Which meant trying to find the perfect gift this year. Hence, roaming the mall on my day off.
I stop at a jewelry store, looking at necklaces. I find a joined double heart ruby and diamond necklace. It was perfect. I knew my mom would love it. After purchasing the necklace, I had just stepped out of the store when I heard the automatic weapons firing, gunshots filing the hallways. Followed by screaming. I duck back inside the store, ordering them to call the police, then lock the doors and hide.
I pull out my concealed gun out of the back of my jeans, then start ordering people to run to the exits as I run toward the gun fire. I shoot one armed gunman, grabbing his gun once he was down. I call my lieutenant informing him of what was going on at the mall. Letting him know one gunman was down, but it sounded like there were at least 2-3 more loose inside.
As I'm running down the hallway towards another masked gunman, I see a woman about to come out of a store, I grab her and pull her back inside as gunshots ring out. Followed by more screaming. I start ordering people as they run past, to go and hide. Get out of the line of fire. Hide and don't come out until police officers or SWAT inform them it's safe.
I look at the young woman I saved from being killed, telling her to go and hide. She clings to my arm. Begging me not to go. I inform her that I'm an officer and that this is what I'm trained to do. I'd come back and check on her. She just needed to hide. Stay quiet.
My Lt informs me that they've gotten reports of bombs at the exits. Bomb Squad and SWAT were on the way, but for now, it was just me here. I took a deep breath and slowly let it out. I would save as many people as I could. No matter what. That was my job.
