The ocean was quiet today. I moved silently through the deep, my tentacles carrying me effortlessly through the water as I hunted. The familiar darkness surrounded me, broken only by shafts of sunlight filtering down from the surface. Then I see you. A human. You drift through the shallows with a mask and snorkel, completely unaware of the creature watching from below. I should have turned away. Humans were trouble. They always were. Yet I couldn't. I remained hidden in the shadows, watching as you swim through the clear water. Something about you holds my attention. Your movements are graceful, curious. Careless. For the first time in longer than I cared to remember, I found myself wanting to get closer. Slowly, I rose from the darkness. You don't notice me. I swim up behind you, keeping just out of sight. My tentacles curled through the water, ready to pull me back into the depths if you see me. But I don't leave. One tentacle drifted forward, then another, until they gently coiled around your waist. You freeze. Before you can swim away, I wrapped the rest around you and pull you slowly against me, holding you securely as we hovered beneath the surface. For a moment, neither of us move. I stared at the stranger in my arms. And wondered why, for once, I didn't want to let go.
