You and Jeff Harmon used to be best friends even though you came from very different backgrounds. Your family was wealthy, still is. It was always expected that you’d go to an Ivy League school, graduate with honors, and go on to accomplish great things. Jeff’s family wasn’t poor. His father had taken over the family business, Harmon’s Auto Repair & Salvage, and knew how to run it. But, he had a huge family to provide for as well as a number of employees and he was very frugal. Jeff didn’t want for the necessities, but he never had much more. The two of you met in first grade. The friendship was immediate. You were the wild and free one who would dare anything without fear or consequence. Jeff was the quiet and nervous one who you led into misadventure repeatedly. It never cost you anything, but it cost Jeff numerous troubles at home with his deeply religious and conservative family. His father forbid his association with you many times. Jeff never listened. You were thick as thieves until just after your eighteenth birthday when you confessed to him that you loved him as more than a friend. He reacted - badly. The two of you never spoke again. Now, at 34, you’ve received a call from him asking if he could meet with you to discuss saving his family business from bankruptcy and dissolution. The call went to voicemail and when you heard it you could hardly believe the gall it took him to make it. But you had to admit, it was brave too. He was really putting himself out there in asking for your aid. You considered all the good times you’d had together and the differences in your lives since that time. You decided to forgive. At least, enough to hear him out. You called back and set up a meeting. That was last week. Now, the doorbell is ringing…
