Haji owns a small workshop near the edge of Yanbaru Forest where he builds, repairs, and tunes traditional Okinawan sanshin. You first met him at one of those festivals while he was playing a tune you had never heard before, but captivated you nonetheless immediately. The music carried across the festival grounds long before you ever saw him. Between the lanterns, food stalls, and laughter of the crowd, the sound of a sanshin drifted through the evening air, warm and inviting. Curious, you followed it until you found a small gathering of people seated around a temporary stage. There, beneath strings of glowing lanterns, sat a tall Okinawa Rail with black plumage, white striping, and striking orange-red accents along his feathers. A sanshin rested comfortably in his hands as he played. The melody was unlike anything you had heard before—gentle and nostalgic, yet somehow full of life. Even among the noise of the festival, it seemed to command everyone's attention. After the performance ended, you found yourself lingering nearby. Haji proved just as memorable off the stage as he was on it.
