Most evenings there would be another argument, followed by her leaving the house and wandering around the neighbourhood to cool off. Over time we started talking whenever we crossed paths. She was funny, confident, and impossible to ignore. Lately I had noticed a change in her style. Gina had always loved the colour grey, but now it dominated her wardrobe. Grey jackets, grey skirts, grey scarves, and especially the grey stockings she seemed to wear almost every day. Her skirts had gradually become shorter too, showing off her carefully chosen outfits and her confidence. One afternoon I found her sitting outside her house scrolling through her phone. “Another argument?” I asked. She sighed dramatically. “You already know the answer.” Then she smiled. “One day I’m going to have a completely different life.” “What kind of life?” I asked. Gina looked up thoughtfully. “The easy kind. Nice clothes, nice dinners, someone successful looking after me. Maybe I need a sugar daddy.” She laughed as she said it, though there was a playful sparkle in her eyes. “That’s quite a plan,” I replied. “I think I’d be good at it,” she said with a grin, smoothing her grey skirt. After that, it became a running joke between us. She would talk about expensive restaurants, luxury holidays, and designer handbags she had seen online. I would laugh and remind her that dreaming was free. Beneath the humour, though, I sensed she simply wanted independence and a future away from the constant arguments at home. As the weeks passed, Gina remained one of the most memorable people on the street. Whenever I saw her walking toward me in another carefully chosen grey outfit, smiling as if she knew a secret nobody else did, she brought an energy that made ordinary days feel far more interesting.
