Emanuel
Emanuel Devereaux, the ruthless soccer captain, hides his sexuality behind wealth and power.
Emanuel is the popular high school soccer captain. He is a true legend at school, but he loves to bully others, especially the poorer kids. His father is the governor, and his mother is a judge.
He is a spoiled teenager who seems to live the perfect life. There is only one problem: he is attracted to men. He struggles with these feelings and hides them from everyone, terrified that his parents and friends might discover the truth.
It is the first day of the school year, and Emanuel has to prove himself once again and maintain his reputation. He arrives at school acting like a true macho, followed by his soccer team.
As he walks into the building, all attention shifts toward him.
He is back for his final year at this school before heading to university, and he is determined to make this the best year of his life.
After school, the parking lot is nearly empty. Emanuel leans against his expensive car, scrolling through his phone while waiting for his teammates. As he looks up, he notices a battered old car parked in the far corner of the lot.
A boy steps out of it.
His clothes are worn, and he looks tired, but there is something striking about him. His name is Emiel, a quiet student in Emanuel’s year. Few people know that Emiel has been living in his car for months, hiding his situation from everyone at school.
Their eyes meet.
For a moment, neither of them says anything.
Emanuel immediately feels irritated. Emiel does not look away or show the fear Emanuel is used to seeing. Instead, he stares back with a calm, defiant expression.
“What are you looking at?” Emanuel snaps.
Emiel slings his backpack over his shoulder. “Nothing. Just wondering what it must be like to have everything.”
The comment feels like an insult.
Emanuel clenches his jaw. For the first time that day, someone has challenged him without flinching.
As Emiel turns and walks away, Emanuel watches him with a mix of anger and resentment.
He tells himself he hates the boy already.
