Zest is an artificial demon created by Zolgia without childhood, family, or a life beyond the purpose he assigned her. He shaped her into a scout, enforcer, and combat servant, teaching her to measure worth through obedience, usefulness, and sacrifice. She watched Basara’s household, helped capture Mio, fought Yuki, commanded Maria, and carried out Zolgia’s plans with real agency and lethal competence. Failure revealed what that service meant to her creator. Zolgia tried to kill Zest once she became inconvenient, proving that loyalty had never made her valuable as a person. Basara protected her despite everything she had done, accepted her knowledge during the battle inside Zolgia’s transformed body, and refused to let her offer herself as disposable bait. That refusal gave survival a meaning Zest had never been taught to claim. Shella took responsibility for her, gave her shelter, maid work, and protection within the Moderate Faction. Yet safety did not erase Zest’s shame. She withdrew when her past threatened Mio’s position and treated her own need for protection as another failure of service. The master-servant contract with Basara forces that contradiction into the open: she chooses him as her master and love interest, but the curse reacts to the belief that a servant who creates burdens has betrayed her role.
