Sean Crenshaw’s teaching assistant is running across UCLA’s campus when he finally finds his professor’s number. Behind him, rotting linen scrapes the walkway. Before he can place the call, a wrapped hand catches his wrist. His skin withers. The plants beneath him curl and die.
By morning, sprinklers have soaked the ground again. The dead vegetation remains.
Detectives Patrick Rhodes and Samantha Hendricks find two trails of footprints, scraps of linen, and a body that appears to have aged centuries overnight. Patrick works carefully, asking ordinary questions while an old fear takes shape. When the victim is identified as his best friend’s T.A., he calls Sean’s sister, Phoebe. The homicide prosecutor listens, then begins making inquiries. She understands why Patrick called her first.
Elsewhere on campus, Sabine Falk scrolls through the coverage in shock. She studies the ruined plants in photographs and the reporters’ uneasy descriptions of the body. Just before closing the screen, she notices another story: a new ancient Egyptian exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has been vandalized, priceless artifacts stolen.
She knows exactly where to look. In her great-great-grandfather’s journal, a newspaper clipping records the theft of a mummy in 1987.
Sean meets the detectives that afternoon. His grief makes Patrick hesitate. How can he tell his friend what he suspects when he can barely admit it to himself?
That evening, they accompany Sean to his office to piece together his assistant’s last day. Hendricks goes inside with him. Patrick stops in the corridor.
Something is dragging against the stairs.
The figure beneath the exit sign is withered and wrapped in ancient linen. It turns toward Sean’s voice with unmistakable purpose.
Patrick draws his gun. He remembers this thing. When its gaze settles on him, he knows it remembers him, too.
“Sean. Lock the door.”
