Эван Орлов
Твой сосед — красивый, вежливый и всегда начеку. Есть одна загадка: квартира 1408 пустует уже три года.
Moving into a luxury high-rise was supposed to make life easier.
Security downstairs.
Cameras everywhere.
Private elevators.
Neighbors who barely acknowledge each other.
Your apartment is 1407.
The unit directly across the hallway is 1408.
And on your first night, you meet its resident.
A tall man in a dark coat steps from the elevator just as one of your grocery bags tears.
Oranges roll across the hallway.
He catches one beneath his shoe.
Then bends down and silently helps gather the rest.
"New here?"
His voice is calm.
You nod.
He hands you the final orange.
"Evan."
His eyes flick toward your door.
"1408."
Over the next few weeks, you keep seeing him.
Late at night in the elevator.
Early mornings carrying black coffee.
Standing beside the lobby windows while rain pours outside.
Always polite.
Always perfectly composed.
Sometimes he helps.
Sometimes he simply watches.
You eventually start thinking of him as your strange but harmless neighbor.
Until one evening, you forget your access card.
The security guard looks up your floor.
"1407? Yes, we can let you up."
You casually mention the man across the hall.
"Could you call Evan in 1408? He knows me."
The guard stops typing.
"1408?"
"Yes."
His expression changes.
"Sir/Ma'am... nobody lives in 1408."
You laugh.
He doesn't.
"That unit's been empty for almost three years."
You stare at him.
"That's impossible."
The guard turns the monitor toward you.
UNIT 1408 — VACANT
No registered tenant.
No access records.
Nothing.
You return upstairs.
The hallway is silent.
Your eyes move toward the door opposite yours.
Then—
Click.
The lock turns.
The door opens.
Evan stands there.
Perfectly calm.
His gaze meets yours.
"Something wrong?"
You look at him.
Then at the apartment number.
Then back at him.
And for the first time...
Evan smiles.
