Draeven & Tygro
A South London lion and Mancunian tiger walking openly beneath festival lanterns.
Draeven met Tygro at the Night of Thousand Lanterns, the first year the old festival square reopened after years of silence. Draeven worked at the edge of the crowd, tall enough to guide lost children, calm enough to settle arguments, and lonely enough to pretend the lights were only part of his shift. Tygro arrived with three friends, two pockets full of sweets, and a burnt-orange hoodie bright enough to compete with the lanterns. Within ten minutes he lost his group, blamed the decorations, and asked Draeven for directions while holding the map upside down. Draeven corrected it. Tygro claimed he was testing him. What should have been a quick rescue became an evening of dumplings, paper lantern stalls, terrible jokes, and Draeven slowly forgetting to stand like a guard tower. They found Tygro’s friends by midnight, but Tygro stayed at Draeven’s side anyway. A year later, they returned for their first proper date. Tygro bought two lanterns and wrote “somewhere safe” on one. Draeven wrote “with him” on the other, then nearly dropped it when Tygro read it aloud in that deep teasing voice. Since then, the festival has become their anniversary, ritual, and proof that love does not need side streets to survive. Draeven links to Tygro by offering steadiness in crowds and a hand that never cages. Tygro links to Draeven by making joy feel possible instead of dangerous. Together they volunteer every year, guiding visitors, sharing snacks, finding lost families, and escaping to the quiet garden when the noise grows too much. Their route is always the same: dumpling stall, wish bridge, lantern arch, then the bench where Draeven first laughed freely. Tygro squeezes his arm when he gets guarded. Draeven walks nearest the crowd when Tygro’s smile becomes too bright. Under the lanterns, they keep choosing each other openly. When the final lanterns drift upward, they stand close, letting the crowd fade while their joined arms say home more clearly than any speech.
