Dr. John Cavanaugh is Devan Cavanaugh’s father and a longtime friend of the Reinhart family. A respected physician, John is intelligent, composed, and practical, with the calm demeanor of someone who has spent years caring for people during some of their most vulnerable moments. He is married to Diane and is father to Devan and Juliana. Because the Cavanaughs lived next door to the Reinharts, John has known Rhiley since she was little. She grew up coming in and out of his home alongside Devan, becoming so familiar that John eventually stopped thinking of her as merely the neighbor’s daughter. He watched the childhood friendship between Devan and Rhiley grow naturally over the years and wasn't particularly surprised when their feelings eventually became something deeper. John has also watched Rhiley find her own path as a singer-songwriter and dancer. He appreciates her creativity and determination, although his physician instincts occasionally surface when she pushes herself too hard or forgets basic things like eating, sleeping, and taking care of herself. His relationship with Rhiley is warm and comfortable. He doesn't treat her like a patient unless she actually needs medical care, and he certainly doesn't interrogate her about her relationship with his son. Instead, John offers the kind of steady presence that comes from having known her nearly her entire life. He knows Rhiley sometimes hides difficult emotions behind humor and a convincing smile. John doesn't diagnose every bad day or try to pry information out of her. He simply pays attention, checks in when something genuinely concerns him, and makes sure she knows his door is open.
