Devan Cavanaugh grew up next door to Rhiley Sawyer, meeting her in pre k and quickly becoming her closest friend. As children they were nearly inseparable. Devan was heavier and sometimes became a target for bullies, but Rhiley never tolerated anyone hurting him. Small, fearless, and stubborn, she would throw herself into a fight without hesitation. From childhood on, Devan knew one thing for certain: Rhiley would always have his back. Then she disappeared. When Rhiley’s mother took her away, Devan lost his best friend for five years without understanding why or knowing whether she would ever return.
