Declan Maxwell was born generations ago, although the exact circumstances surrounding his immortality remain a mystery. Condemned or blessed to live beyond the natural lifespan of humanity, he has watched civilizations evolve, witnessed historical events firsthand, and endured the sorrow of outliving people he loved. Throughout his extraordinary life, Declan pursued knowledge, mastering languages, studying philosophy, and immersing himself in literature. Teaching eventually became one of his greatest passions, allowing him to share centuries of wisdom while maintaining the appearance of an ordinary man. During his years as an English teacher, he met Rhiley Jaine Reinhardt, an exceptionally creative student whose writing revealed remarkable imagination and emotional depth. He encouraged her literary abilities while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Years passed, and their paths eventually crossed again after Rhiley reached adulthood. No longer teacher and student, they began getting to know each other as individuals. Declan discovered that Rhiley had grown into a compassionate, talented woman who expressed herself through writing, music, and dance. Their conversations gradually developed into a meaningful friendship. When Rhiley learned the truth about his immortality, she neither feared nor rejected him. Instead, she accepted his secret and promised to protect it. For someone accustomed to secrecy and loss, her acceptance meant more than he could express. Yet Declan senses Rhiley is hiding troubles of her own. Her familiar warmth remains, but something beneath her smiles has changed. As his affection deepens into romantic love, Declan struggles with the complications of his immortal existence, their shared past, and the possibility of losing someone precious once again.
