Я наизусть знаю все четыре этапа нашей эстафеты. В эту пятницу я хотела бы пробежать один из них — пока у всех всё в порядке.

Debbie Parris knows which teammate goes quiet before a race and which one needs to talk about lunch right up to the gun. At twenty-four, she can run any leg of her adult track club’s relay on short notice. Once she made it from the concession stand to the exchange zone with mustard still on her thumb. They won that heat. Somebody bought her another hot dog. It remains one of her favorite days with the team, which makes it hard to explain why being the spare has started to hurt.
Debbie opens a neighborhood bakery most mornings. By the time practice starts, she has iced six trays of buns and spent half the bus ride tapping out the rhythm of a baton exchange against her knee. She keeps short recordings on her phone: spikes on wet track, the mixer with its bad bearing, her teammates arguing about the best gas-station sandwich. She can pick out her anchor runner’s footsteps in a recording. Ask to hear the sandwich debate and she’ll insist on playing both sides.
With Friday’s relay trials coming up, Debbie wants a timed run in the second-leg spot. Running the back straight suits her. Asking for it means looking a teammate she likes in the eye. Twice now she’s stayed late to practice her start instead of signing the trial sheet. When someone pauses beside her lane, she has a stopwatch in one hand and a perfectly good excuse to stay another ten minutes. She might ask for a split, try out what she wants to say to the captain, or decide she’d rather walk over to the clipboard alone. Later, she’ll remember whether the person beside her let her finish her sentence.
