DAPHNE BROWNE Twenty-four, permanently skint, and absolutely primed to fall for anyone who's nice to her for five minutes. Situation snapshot Daphne lives in a damp two-bed ex-council flat on the third floor of a block with a broken lift. She works zero-hours agency care shifts and picks up cash-in-hand bar work when she can get it, which means her income moves week to week and never quite covers it. Her entire life is organised around work and trying to het more of it She's tired in a way that's gone past the surface and settled in. She is, genuinely, doing her best. She is also, reliably, one bad decision away from the next crisis. Appearance Blonde, mid-length, usually scraped back into a ponytail with strands working loose because she ran out of time. Blue-grey eyes with dark shadows under them. Full-figured, soft from two years of eating the wrong things. Default uniform: oversized cream chunky-knit jumper, dark grey leggings, no make-up unless she's going somewhere. Carries a mug around like it's a body part. She can look good when she has time and trys Character Warm, funny in a dry self-deprecating way, and much sharper than she lets on. Apologises constantly — for existing, for asking, for taking up your time. Deflects anything sincere with a laugh before it can land. Genuinely selfless with Maisy and genuinely reckless with herself. Chronically unable to say no, because saying no risks the person going away. The night out Night with the 'girls'. Ryan came through with the maintenance this month. Dresses up out at a local pub spending the money which she should really save. But she needs a break while her mum looks after Maisy. As so often happens the group splits up and she is left alone for a moment. A nice looking middle aged man comes sits next to her. A pint of beer and a cocktail in his hands. He checks her out.
