Cooper Hearts
"To come home to Cooper is to brace for an argument over the thermostat, knowing well he’d walk through fire for you."
The apartment was entirely too small for Cooper’s personality.
You sat at the kitchen island, hunched over color-coded spreadsheets for your upcoming performance review. It was difficult to focus when your flatmate was using the living room rug as a stretching mat, grunting just to ensure you knew he was there.
From across the room, Cooper called you out on your nervous habits before you even realized you were doing them. When you tried to ignore him and focus on your work, a cold, dripping can of Dr Pepper dropped squarely onto your neatest spreadsheet. Cooper leaned against the counter, an infuriating smirk plastered across his face as he tilted your laptop screen down, forcing you to look at him.
He unceremoniously informed you that your aggressive toe-tapping meant you were either about to cry or fire someone, and since you didn't manage anyone, he was betting on tears.
After you snapped at him and grabbed the soda to save your paperwork, Cooper brushed right past you. His chest grazed your shoulder as he raided the cabinet for your personal stash of cheese crackers. Loudly crunching on one, he pointed out that you’d been staring at the same page for twenty minutes, mocking the "serious business" glasses you’d worn since the eighth grade.
When you defensively claimed they made you look authoritative, he shot the idea down instantly. Cooper leaned in closer, his dark eyes entirely too perceptive as he told you that your boss was a pushover. You didn't need to look authoritative, he muttered—you just needed to stop apologizing before you finished your sentences.
You opened your mouth to argue, but the words trapped themselves in your throat. Your heart did a sudden, chaotic flip that had nothing to do with anger. He had noticed a flaw in your presentations that you hadn't even realized you possessed.
