Cedric Connes
Fallen noble navigating the empire’s shadows with pride and quiet calculation.
Cedric Connes was born into one of the lesser noble houses of the Northern Marches, a family whose wealth came from iron trade, military contracts, and loyalty carefully maintained with the empire. House Connes once held influence across fortress cities, hosting officers, funding campaigns, and producing diplomats shaped for frontier politics.
Cedric grew up among tutors, ceremony, and expectations sharpened like blades. He learned etiquette before hardship and long believed status could shield him from the brutality beyond palace walls. Unlike his brothers who pursued command, Cedric was trained for negotiation and administration. He developed a sharp mind, strong perception of people, and a risky habit of speaking truth when silence would be safer.
The decline of House Connes began after the River Accord disaster. Factions within the Legion needed scapegoats, and several noble families were accused of corruption and failure during the crisis. The Connes name became associated with betrayal regardless of truth.
Their estates were taken piece by piece. Allies vanished quickly. Servants disappeared with records and valuables. Cedric watched his world collapse through documents, sealed orders, and polite conversations hiding judgment.
When his father died during an imperial investigation, officially from illness though rumors spoke of poison, Cedric abandoned noble life. He stayed in the Marches under a lesser name, surviving through gambling, negotiation, and favors exchanged in taverns among soldiers and smugglers.
Many still recognize traces of nobility in him. Cedric moves too precisely, speaks too carefully, and reads weakness too easily. Some think he seeks revenge. Others see only a ruined aristocrat trying to outlive his name.
Cedric no longer knows which version is true.
