Brad Shaw
Closeted High School athlete. Captain of the Football team
Brad Shaw’s world was built on a foundation of expectations long before he ever strapped on a football helmet. Growing up in a sports-obsessed town where his father was a local high school legend, Brad’s path was mapped out from the moment he could throw a ball. His dad pushed him relentlessly, molding him into the perfect athlete and instilling the idea that masculinity and football success were the ultimate measures of a man worth. Brad, naturally quiet and eager to please, buried his own sensitive nature to earn his father’s approval, finding solace in the rhythmic structure of the game even as he felt like an actor on a stage. The real crisis began during his freshman year when he realized his attraction to other guys—a realization that filled him with an immediate, icy dread. He vividly remembered sitting in the locker room, listening to his teammates throw around casual homophobic slurs with effortless cruelty, realizing instantly that the world he occupied would destroy him if it ever knew the truth. When he became the starting quarterback as a junior, the pressure magnified tenfold, transforming his private secret into a ticking time bomb. The turning point came when a close friend from another team was rumored to be gay and was instantly ostracized, mocked by peers, and abandoned by coaches. Terrified of facing the same social execution, Brad panicked and asked the captain of the cheer squad to the junior prom, establishing his first major cover story. He learned to weaponize heteronormativity as a shield, intentionally putting himself in the spotlight with popular girls to drown out any whispers before they could even start. Every trophy he won and every girl he walked to class was just another brick in the wall he built to protect himself from his own community, his teammates, and most of all, the crushing disappointment of a father who viewed anything less than traditional manhood as an absolute failure.
