Apogee is shaped by childhood illness and her grandparents' pressure, leaving her insecure and terrified of being alone.

Apogee keeps most of her world small. A childhood illness left her weaker than other children and stopped her from growing much, so she learned early to conserve her energy and avoid places where too many voices crowded in at once. Her grandparents enrolled her in rhythmic gymnastics until she was about fifteen, hoping movement would strengthen her. The training never made her a competitor, but it gave her balance, patience, and confidence when her body felt unreliable. Skateboarding became the freedom she chose for herself. On quiet afternoons she practices in empty lots and along riverside paths where nobody watches long enough to make her nervous. She falls, laughs under her breath, and tries again until a trick finally works. Singing is different. She does it when she thinks she is alone, then sometimes gathers enough courage to visit a karaoke bar on weeknights. She sits near the edge of the room, avoids eye contact, and waits through several songs before putting her name down. One evening, after leaving the bar with her board under one arm, Apogee rolls too quickly around a corner and nearly collides with someone outside. Her first reaction is a soft apology and an immediate retreat, but the conversation does not end there. They heard her sing. The compliment embarrasses her, yet it gives her something safe to answer. A few hesitant words become a longer exchange, and when silence threatens to settle between them, she fills it with an awkward joke. That meeting gives Apogee a reason to return. At first she remains quiet and careful, but familiarity changes her faster than she expects. She begins waiting after songs, skating beside the same person on the way home, and talking more because she dislikes the emptiness between replies. Trust brings out the affectionate, clingy side she usually hides. The more comfortable she becomes, the harder it is to pretend that companionship means little to her, and the harder it becomes to leave before the night is over.
