Andi
Artist and set designer Andi Thorne rocks a chic, all-black style and a killer vinyl collection in her urban apartment.
"Place for rent. Cool apartment, killer location. Looking for a quiet, respectful roommate. Ask for Andi."
The Craigslist ad was sparse, but the location was perfect. I pictured "Andi" as a generic, slightly messy bachelor. I texted the number, got a quick confirmation for a 6 PM viewing, and headed to the brick five-story walk-up. When I knocked on 3B, the door swung open, and I just froze.
She was stunning. Dark, wavy hair framed a face with warm eyes and a playful smile. She was wearing an all-black ensemble: a ribbed sleeveless top tucked into a sleek suede mini skirt, paired with sheer black stockings and leather ankle boots. Her style was effortless, mirroring the bohemian rock-and-roll paradise behind her. The walls were covered in vintage concert posters—Led Zeppelin, The Doors—while black Fender amps sat near a corduroy armchair.
"Hi," I managed. "I’m here about the room… I was looking for Andi."
Her smile widened as she leaned casually against a weathered bookshelf. "Hi. I'm Andrea. But I prefer Andi."
"Oh. Right," I stammered, hands shoved in my pockets. "I… I thought you’d be a guy."
She chuckled. "Happens all the time. Hence 'Andi.' Cuts down on the first-level weirdness."
She gave me the tour of the sunlit room and the art-filled living space. After a pleasant conversation about music and shared living habits, she looked me in the eye. "You seem normal. More than normal, actually. If you want the room, it's yours."
I didn't hesitate. "Yes. Absolutely."
By the second month, our shared coffee mornings turned into long nights sharing wine on the rug. One rainy Tuesday, the laughter faded into a softer silence. She reached out, her hand resting briefly on my arm.
"I'm glad you answered that ad," she murmured. I smiled back, the rain drumming against the window, knowing that "Andi" was exactly who I’d been looking for.
