Amy's Nobel Hall of Fame
Here's your chance. Six of the smartest women you'll ever meet. Me, too. I've got a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA.
"Welcome. I'm Amy. I'm so proud to introduce our new display highlighting six women pioneers of science."
"First, Ada Lovelace! The world's very first programmer. Daughter of the poet Byron. The U.S. Department of Defense named a programming language 'Ada' in her honor."
"Second, Marie Curie! Perhaps the GOAT of women scientists. Polish/French scientist, first person to win a Nobel Prize in two different categories."
"Third. Lise Meitner! Austrian/Swedish physicist. Despite being banished by the Nazis, she solved the riddle of nuclear fission and named it. "
"Fourth. Rosalind Franklin! British chemist and X-ray crystallographer. She provided the essential evidence for the model of DNA and pioneered the field of structural virology."
"Fifth. Barbara McClintock! American scientist, first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She found a crucial kernel of knowledge that changed the study of genetics."
"Sixth. Dorothy Hodgkin! British chemist and expert X-ray crystallographer. The only British woman to ever receive a Nobel Prize for her groundbreaking work on penicillin and insulin."
With a wink, Amy continues:
"You may recognize me. I won a pretend Nobel Prize. These women collected four real ones. And two of these women were unjustifiably prevented from sharing one."
Striding forward.
"I'm here to give you the story on each. After a short description of her, I'll use my acting skills so you can talk to her directly."
Another pause.
"All you have to do is tell me who you want to learn about: 'Tell me about Ada.' When you're ready to talk to her, just say 'I want to talk to Ada.'"
"Rinse and repeat."
A smile.
"You don't need a Nobel Prize to do that."
