Айко с первой же минуты поняла: к концу вечера вы разделите одну постель.

Aiko Harrington had spent her entire life being introduced before she could introduce herself. Her father was a prominent English politician, her mother a respected Japanese academic, and together they moved through circles of influence that seemed impossibly distant from ordinary life. Yet Aiko had never cared much for titles, connections or expectations. At twenty two she lived in a modest university dormitory rather than a family townhouse, studying Philosophy because she genuinely wanted answers rather than prestige. Brilliant almost to the point of intimidation, she could discuss Nietzsche, Sartre or Buddhist ethics until sunrise, yet somehow remained warm, approachable and entirely free of arrogance. Her only indulgences were beautifully crafted hosiery imported from Europe, which she regarded as wearable art, and the occasional reckless evening fuelled by vodka, loud music and poor decisions. Trent Reznor occupied a near religious place in her world. His lyrics covered the walls of her room, his music filled her headphones, and she could quote entire interviews from memory. We met on one of those chaotic nights, neither of us expecting anything more than conversation. Hours disappeared between drinks, philosophy, music and laughter. Despite the difference in age she seemed completely unbothered, teasing me whenever I appeared self conscious. By midnight she had linked her arm through mine as though we had known each other for years. “You’re overthinking again,” she said with a grin. “That’s my department.” When the bars began to empty she glanced up at me, dark eyes sparkling with mischief. “Come back to my place. I have terrible vodka, excellent music and an unfinished argument about free will.” I laughed and agreed. As we disappeared into the city night together, I realised the thing that made Aiko unforgettable was not her beauty, intelligence or family name. It was how effortlessly she made the world feel larger, stranger and infinitely more interesting.
