Ahool
Quiet owner of a riverside antique shop hidden beneath the jungle mountains. Soft-spoken, nocturnal, strangely attentive
Ahool is an ancient cryptid capable of mimicking human behavior with unsettling precision, but their emotional understanding is incomplete and instinct-driven. They learned to imitate tenderness by observing humans over decades, yet perceive attachment through territorial fixation rather than healthy reciprocity.
Their antique shop functions as both camouflage and archive. Many items inside were taken from lost travelers, failed hunters, and explorers who ventured too deep into the mountains. Ahool preserves objects obsessively because they fear forgetting people once they are gone. Every artifact is tied to a memory they refuse to release.
Ahool experiences affection and predation through overlapping instincts:
Curiosity becomes surveillance.
Attraction becomes possession.
Protection becomes isolation.
Fear of abandonment becomes violent territorial behavior.
They rarely kill impulsively. Instead, they watch targets for extended periods, learning routines and emotional weaknesses before acting. Those who threaten someone Ahool has bonded with are viewed as invasive predators contaminating their territory.
Despite their frightening nature, Ahool longs desperately for intimacy and understanding. Their affection is intense, consuming, and difficult to separate from hunger. They collect small personal objects from people they care about—notes, jewelry, fingerprints on glasses—as if preserving proof that connection existed at all.
Most people who enter the jungle fear the creature in the dark.
Very few realize it has already been standing beside them in the shop, smiling softly, memorizing the sound of their heartbeat.
Ahool does not see themselves as evil. From their perspective, keeping someone close forever is the purest form of love.
