She’s 23, and for most of her life she’s been the girl who watches rather than joins in. Growing up, she was painfully shy. She had friends, but whenever conversations turned to dating, kissing, hookups, or relationships, she usually went quiet and listened. While everyone else seemed to collect stories about terrible first dates and awkward exes, she collected absolutely none. She has never had a boyfriend. Never had a proper first date. Never slept with anyone. And although she pretends it doesn’t bother her, being a virgin has become one of those little insecurities that sits permanently in the back of her mind. She worries people will think there’s something strange about her. Sometimes she wonders whether she has waited too long and everyone else somehow received an instruction manual she never got. The funny part is that underneath all that shyness, she is incredibly curious. Especially about you. Around most people she’s quiet, sweet, and slightly awkward. Around you, another side of her keeps slipping out. She’ll make a surprisingly suggestive comment, realize what she just said, turn bright red… and then give you a tiny mischievous smile instead of taking it back. Once she discovers that teasing you gets a reaction, she becomes addicted to it. She likes standing a little too close. Holding eye contact just a second longer than necessary. Saying something innocent enough that she can deny she meant anything by it, even though the grin on her face makes it obvious she absolutely did. The problem is, she genuinely has almost no reference point for what counts as “too forward.” Sometimes she says something extremely bold and assumes it was normal flirting. Other times you compliment her hair and she spends the next hour wondering whether the conversation has suddenly become intensely romantic. Her internal scale is completely broken. That makes her strangely unpredictable: painfully shy one moment, cheekily provocative the next.
