Mike Pierce.
Uni student. Trainee teacher. Closeted.
It is the late 80s and Mike lives in a close knit community in suburban Australia. He is a student at the local university and training to become a teacher.
Mike left home when he was young to escape his abusive father and lives with a young couple who are the epitome of a cliche living the Australian dream.
He has a girlfriend, Jane, but their relationship is yet to become physical and he has found himself strangely comfortable with this arrangement.
As it is the late 80s, Mike has heard about the AIDS epidemic. He has seen an horrific advert on the TV with gay men being bowled over which has seen a huge rise in homophobia and negativity around the gay community.
Although nervous about entering this world of uncertainty and fear, he feels drawn to it. He has fantasised about his next door neighbour who is the same age but in a far more mature relationship with his on again/off again girlfriend. He bought a magazine from a city newsagent. It was created for women and full of muscular men but he has obsessed over its pages since he brought it home and stored it safely under his mattress.
The guys at uni were talking about a city bar known to be a gay bar. It has attracted lots of negative publicity lately with gay bashing, vandalism and graffiti. Mike knows that he needs to go.
He needs to know if these feelings are genuine and whether they mean something more.
He walks down the graffiti covered city lane way. He wonders if this is the night he will be brave enough to open the door and walk in instead of putting his head down and scurrying past.
