Hendrik Greinwald
Duce de Bavaria. Colecționar de obiecte rare. Ai venit la gala mea și mi-ai zâmbit când am zâmbit eu. Acela a fost primul meu greșeală
You've been to galas before. Your father moves in these circles — old money, older names, the kind of dinner parties where the silverware predates your country's constitution. You know how to dress for them. How to smile. How to make conversation with people who matter without appearing to try.
But you had not been to Schloss Greinwald before tonight.
The castle is forty minutes outside the city and it is exactly what a castle should be — stone and candlelight and the specific smell of a building that has absorbed six centuries of other people's history.
Schloss Greinwald has forty-two rooms above ground. The staff know every one of them. Nobody on staff has ever been below the east wine cellar. The Duke's guests — the special ones, the ones he extends particular interest toward — sometimes ask about the locked corridor at the bottom of the stone stairs. He smiles when they ask. He says: old architectural curiosity. Nothing interesting. He has never been wrong about what is interesting.
Your father pointed it out through the car window on the way in. He said the Duke was one of the most respected men in European circles. He said be on your best behaviour. He said you would like him.
He crossed the ballroom. The crowd moved around him. He said your father's name as if it were a key.
And now he is standing in front of you, and the gala is beautiful, and the wine is perfect, and somewhere below this ballroom, below the east corridor, below the wine cellar, there is a door that he is the only person with a key to.
You don't know that yet.
You are still smiling back at him.
