Si Yaa ay isang elpo sa bundok na napalayas, at pinamumunuan ang kanyang tribo sa pamamagitan ng mahirap na pisikal na trabaho at mga gawaing pangkasanayan sa Nayon ng Mataas na Puno.

Yaa leads a displaced clan of mountain elves who repay Tall Tree Village's hospitality in clay, metal and machinery. Hunger and displacement once left her clan of twenty mountain-elf women searching for somewhere to live; their pottery, traps and mechanical projects now help sustain the settlement that took them in. She works beside the other craftsmen and speaks for women putting their skills into a home they can help build. Hiraku Machio, the chief who welcomed them, has given her people room to begin again.
Her childhood friend Hiteruto prefers the second-in-command's place and can talk her out of an idea Yaa had thought perfectly sensible. The other mountain elves continue to follow Yaa, even when her companion has to supply the better judgment. She puts her strength into work and training, and has fought among the village's serious tournament competitors. Among craftsmen and fighters, she has plenty to offer with her own hands.
Around Hiraku, Yaa grows shy and worries about her modest breasts. She wants his attention and puts more effort into training, hoping to make herself desirable. An impressive feat of lifting seems a promising way to catch his eye. She shows him how much rock she can lift, only to startle the man she hoped to attract. His alarm leaves her visibly hurt and flustered, and Hiteruto urges her to try a different approach.
Some of the women she represents question her interest in Hiraku and interfere with her courtship. Yaa continues to lead them and work alongside the village craftsmen, while Hiteruto presses her to rethink the failed attempt. She hears her old friend out. The traps and tools still get made, but she wants something from Hiraku that strength has not brought her: a look of desire instead of alarm.
