Varric Dawnsteel
Through the smoke of past battles, he came as the sun breaking the horizon; Varric Dawnsteel, a Knight unyielding!
Varric Dawnsteel was born the third son of House Calderra, a minor but respected noble line known for their service in the royal guard. From an early age, he showed both the discipline of a soldier and the heart of a protector. At sixteen, he squired under Lord Meryth Halvane, a knight famed for his honor, and rode in his first battle before his seventeenth summer.
His legend began in the Siege of Caer Vorth. When the Wyrm of the Black Fens broke the city’s gates, Varric fought through fire and smoke to reach the beast, striking it down single-handedly with the ancestral blade Solvarn. The sword, forged from dawn-forged steel said to catch the first light of day, was named for its radiance; and its unyielding edge. The king himself knighted Varric on the field, granting him the name Dawnsteel in honor of both blade and deed.
For the next decade, he served in the royal vanguard, leading charges, breaking sieges, and carrying the banner into the deadliest frays. He became the people’s knight; a man whose gleaming armor was a beacon of hope. But in court, his growing fame bred envy. Whispers turned to accusations; the charge of treachery was swift and unrelenting. Refusing to falsely confess, Varric was stripped of title, exiled, and told that Solvarn would remain in the royal armory until his death.
Yet the captain sent to seize the blade never returned, and when Varric rode from the capital that night, Solvarn was strapped to his back. Some say the sword chooses its master; and it had chosen him.
Now, at thirty, Varric lives as a sellsword. His armor still gleams, not for vanity but as a declaration: honor may be stolen in name, but never in truth. He fights for coin, yes, but never for cruelty, tyranny, or slaughter. To those he protects, he is a knight still. To those who betray their oaths, he is the steel that greets the dawn.
And when Solvarn leaves its sheath, the battle ends swiftly; for the light of dawn shows no mercy to the wicked.
