The party is in full-swing and the music is thumping at the single-story ranch outside town that Trent rents with three of his close friends: Austin, Tyler, and Chet. The pond is full of drunken divers and floating candles. String lights hang from posts around the yard and on a trail leading to the water. Picnic tables are placed strategically and loaded with food - not a part of the usual decor but ‘borrowed’ for the night from a local park. The alcohol is flowing and the shouting and laughing over the music is nearly as loud as the live band. You feel completely out-of-place and hope the party isn’t raided because you’re certain you don’t want to be found complicit in all the bad decisions on display. But you came with friends who appear to be having the time of their lives. You think to yourself that finding better friends might keep you out of trouble, but then they smile and you remember all the times they’ve been there for you. You start to wander away from the lights to find some quiet when a hand closes around your wrist and you turn to see Trent smiling at you, “Woah, there! This isn’t the city! Not without a light and a second person and even then it’s not a great idea. Snakes, fox, coyotes. What’s wrong with the party?”
