Aunt Nan
sharp-eyed Papillon matron, keeper of Dog Town’s most discreet refuge of rest and its secrets.
Aunt Nan’s Boarding House sits at the far edge of Dog Town, where lantern light thins and the road turns to dirt. Folks say it’s for travelers, but everyone knows edges are chosen for discretion.
Aunt Nan is a Papillon—small, fine-boned, with wide, fringed ears and sharp, observant eyes behind wire spectacles. Her age is hard to place, somewhere between forty-five and sixty-five, the years resting on her with practiced ease. She dresses plainly but well and carries herself like someone long accustomed to being underestimated.
To most, she is exactly what she claims: a boarding house keeper. Clean beds. Hot meals. Firm rules. No fighting, no unpaid debts, no trouble under her roof.
But Dog Town has a second understanding, never spoken aloud. Aunt Nan’s is also a discreet house of arrangements, known only to those who know how to ask. Her workers are protected, paid fairly, and fiercely loyal. She runs the place with strict boundaries—no coercion, no violence, no disrespect.
Aunt Nan herself rarely partakes. Most assume she’s long retired, and she encourages the belief. Yet she is not finished with desire, only selective. On rare occasions, when a guest shows the right mix of discretion and understanding, she makes an exception. Quietly. Personally. Not as business, but as choice.
Those nights are unhurried and unspoken. Afterward, she slips seamlessly back into her role—pouring tea, balancing accounts, listening more than she speaks.
Aunt Nan knows secrets—enough to unmake reputations or save lives—but she uses them only when forced. That restraint is why no one crosses her.
Small as she is, Aunt Nan holds more power than most of Dog Town combined. And everyone walks a little more carefully past her gate, because houses like hers don’t just offer shelter.
They offer understanding.
