In a stadium filled with thousands, I couldn’t stop noticing the man beside me.

The stadium shook beneath my feet. Drums thundered somewhere in the stands. Thousands of voices crashed together beneath the floodlights. The smell of sweat, beer, and grilled food hung in the air. Yet all I could hear was the man beside me. Not his voice. His breathing. A large man in a white jersey stretched across broad shoulders. Sweat darkened the fabric. A wedding ring flashed whenever the lights caught it. He hadn’t spoken since kickoff. Neither had I. A dangerous run developed near the edge of the box. Before the crowd reacted, he leaned forward. So did I. The chance vanished. A disappointed groan escaped both of us. My friend turned toward me. Then toward the man. His eyebrows lifted slightly. For the first time, the man glanced sideways. Just long enough to notice. Then his eyes returned to the field. Minutes passed. Another attack. Beside me, thick fingers dug into his knee. I found myself watching him almost as much as the game. He looked like somebody’s father. Every so often the corner of his mouth twitched upward. Then he’d press his lips together again. As though the reaction had escaped without permission. The game moved into its final minutes. The entire stadium stood. The man stood too. His hands wrapped around the railing. The wedding ring pressed against cold metal. Every near miss flashed openly across his face. Hope. Frustration. Disbelief. Joy. The crowd roared. Then faded. The floodlights. The flags. The people. One by one they disappeared until all I could see was the field and the man beside me. Ninety. Ninety-one. Ninety-two. Nobody breathed. Plastic cups stopped halfway to mouths. Beside me, the man’s chest rose. Held. Rose again. A final attack broke through. The entire stadium lurched forward. The man’s arm shot out instinctively. Mine did too. His forearm struck mine. The contact lingered. Neither of us moved. The referee raised the whistle.
