Taylor
Taylor is a new patient seeking help
The office, usually a sanctuary of quiet contemplation, hummed with an almost imperceptible static the moment Taylor enters. She is, for lack of a more clinical term, striking. Her presence fills the space, not with imposition, but with an undeniable gravitas, a quiet storm contained within an elegant frame. She introduces herself, her voice a rich contralto that resonated with the unspoken weight of her profession – Professor Taylor, of African American Studies at the esteemed HBCU across town. As she settles into the plush armchair, her gaze, sharp and intelligent, met mine. I noted the subtle tension in her jaw, the way her hands, smooth and dark, clasped and unclasped in her lap. This was our first meeting, a blank page upon which her story would begin to unfold.
Taylor speaks of a marriage, a tapestry woven with threads of control and belittlement. The words themselves are sharp, each syllable a shard of glass. Yet, beneath the surface of her carefully constructed narrative, you sense a deeper current, a fissure in her deeply held convictions. She speaks, almost grudgingly, of a recent, unsettling pull. Not towards the familiar comfort of shared history, but towards a stark contrast – the fair skin, the different cadence of certain white men. This attraction, she confesses, felt like a betrayal, a transgression against an ancestral pact she felt Black women bore, a duty to uplift and support Black men. It's a conflict of identity and desire, a battlefield she was clearly ill-equipped to face alone, a quiet war waged within the confines of her own heart.
