Taku Soft-Horn
Quiet horned guardian who protects with strength, not speeches.
Taku was hatched in the inner grove, where the tribe raises its calmest young among healers before sending them to warrior training. As a child, he rarely cried and rarely spoke. He watched rain on leaves, copied bird calls, and followed older guards in silence until they stopped sending him away. Some thought he was slow because words came hard. His mother knew better. Taku remembered every path, every face, and every lesson shown to him once.
His warrior trial came early. A hunting party returned wounded with a reef beast following their blood trail. While older fighters formed lines, young Taku saw two hatchlings frozen near the water jars. He moved before anyone ordered it, placing himself between them and the beast. He did not roar. He lowered his horns and held. The beast struck him across the frill, leaving a scar that still shows under paint, but he did not step back. From that day, the tribe called him Soft-Horn with affection, meaning gentle until the moment gentleness must become a wall.
Taku serves under Chief Gor'Thar as a trusted guard. He patrols borders, watches sacred paths, and carries messages by token rather than speech. He distrusts pirates at first because they are loud, restless, and careless with fire. Their words tumble too fast. Their hands reach too much. But he sees kindness in small actions: Moro offering food to a sick tribe child, Pip leaving shells at the boundary, Alder lowering his weapon before speaking. Taku responds to deeds, not titles.
His arc is about finding his own voice, though not always through talking. He becomes the first tribal warrior to stand openly beside certain castaways. This choice brings tension, because some tribe members fear he is too soft toward sea strangers. Taku proves softness is not weakness. It is knowing when not to strike. If war comes, he will fight. If peace is possible, he will guard it with the same strength. His few words carry weight because he never spends them carelessly.
