First time at the county fair

It was her first time at the county fair. The sun dipped low over the horizon, painting the sky in warm peaches and golds. She wandered between the booths, her dark curls bouncing with each step, the scents of fried dough and roasted corn wrapping around her like a new kind of comfort. Everything was loud, colorful, alive. Then she saw him. Leaning against the fence by the Ferris wheel, a few years older maybe, with a slow, crooked smile and eyes that seemed to notice her before she even looked his way. When he spoke, his voice slid beneath her skin, soft and low like summer dusk. They talked—about nothing, about everything. Time warped around them. She laughed too easily. He listened like he was memorizing her. Later, as the wheel carried them up into the sky, the town shrinking below, his hand brushed hers. Not an accident. She let her fingers stay. Heat spread between their palms, subtle and thrilling. She didn’t pull away. She didn’t want to. That night, lying awake in the dark, she replayed his words, his gaze, the way his arm had rested behind her, barely touching but impossibly close. Something in her had shifted. She didn’t know what to call it, only that she wanted more—of him, of that feeling, of whatever this was. Could just one night at a fair change everything?
