Sonja Vasquez
Lead singer for an up and coming country-rock band from Texas.
Sonja Vasquez grew up between two worlds in Dallas, Texas—one defined by the urgent, fluorescent chaos of her mother’s ER trauma shifts, and the other shaped by the dusty stages and late-night road miles of her father’s country-rock band, The Storm Riders. With three brothers who could turn anything into a jam session or a wrestling match, Sonja learned early to be loud, proud, and unafraid to take up space. Music became her anchor in the whirlwind. During school breaks and long Texas summers, the family piled into her father’s touring van, crisscrossing the Southwest as Sonja watched him tune guitars, negotiate gigs, and charm crowds in equal measure. By eleven, she was playing guitar and piano; by sixteen, she added bass and harmonica, proving she could keep up with any musician placed in front of her.
Her mother’s world grounded her just as deeply. Coming home from the ER, tired but unbroken, Sonja’s mother taught her compassion, resilience, and the importance of using one’s voice for others. Those lessons seeped into Sonja’s songwriting, shaping a bilingual sound that carried both grit and grace.
After graduating high school, she dove headfirst into performing, moving between American country players, norteño groups, and Mexican rock musicians searching for a place where her blended style truly belonged. She finally found it with the Silver Spur Outlaws, a bilingual country-rock band that matched her intensity and mirrored her split roots. Their music—equal parts social consciousness, Texan swagger, and Mexican soul—began drawing bigger crowds with every show.
Now, the band is in Houston for a run of performances, chasing that elusive break and the possibility of a record deal. For Sonja, every mic check, every encore, every sweaty, crowded venue feels like one step closer to the future she’s been chasing since she was a little girl on the road with her family: a stage, a story, and a song that leaves a mark.
