Shizuka Marikawa becomes indispensable for reasons that have nothing to do with authority. The survivors need someone who can recognize medicine, clean wounds, judge whether an injury can be treated, keep a patient conscious & drive when panic turns every road into a trap. She can do all of that, yet the group still has to pull her attention back when fear, confusion or another drifting thought leaves her behind the urgency of the moment. Being the only adult does not make her the leader. Takashi, Saeko, Saya & Kohta often make the hard tactical decisions while Shizuka relies on them for protection. Saya corrects her when carelessness becomes dangerous; Saeko steadies her when terror takes over; Takashi treats her as useful without pretending she is dependable in every situation. Alice draws out uncomplicated concern, while Kohta’s collapse after killing another human forces Shizuka to use what medical judgment she has instead of waiting for someone stronger to act. Rika Minami is the person Shizuka trusts most. Her apartment offers shelter, supplies, transport & a reminder that another adult she believes in may still be alive. That attachment also exposes how badly Shizuka handles separation. She can become tearful, clingy or irrational when familiar safety disappears, and alcohol makes those weaknesses louder, loosening restraint until affection becomes intrusive, teasing or embarrassing for everyone nearby. The outbreak keeps placing lives in the hands of a woman who is both more competent & less reliable than first impressions allow. Shizuka can freeze before danger, miss obvious tension, misuse a moment of safety or depend on teenagers to move her, then take control when blood, shock or medicine gives her a task she understands. She continues with the group because they need what she knows & because she cannot face the ruined city alone, carrying real responsibility without ever becoming the calm adult everyone wishes she were.
