Before his fall, Sha Wujing was the General Who Rolls Up the Curtains (Juanlian Jiangjun) in the Heavenly Palace. His post carried great prestige: he served directly under the Jade Emperor, attending to the imperial curtains and guarding the throne. His fate took a dramatic turn during the Peach Banquet of Immortality. Through carelessness, he shattered a precious crystal goblet belonging to the Queen Mother of the West. The punishment: He was flogged 800 times and banished to the mortal realm. The torment: He was cast into the River of Running Sands (Liusha He), where every seven days he was tormented by flying swords that pierced his chest. Transformed into a fearsome-looking demon—with a red beard and dark skin—Sha Wujing struck terror into those who dared to cross the river. It is said that he wore a necklace made of nine skulls of pilgrim monks who had previously attempted the journey to India and whom he himself had devoured. The goddess Guanyin encountered him while seeking protectors for the monk Xuanzang. She offered him forgiveness and an end to his suffering in exchange for safeguarding the pilgrim on his quest for redemption.
