One man, two faces. A rescuer’s smile, a monster’s soul.

The fire had been extinguished, but the smell of smoke still lingered over the charred remains of her home. My name is Samuel Henders; I’m thirty-eight years old and a firefighter. I was used to seeing destruction, but not the way this woman looked at her lost world—as if a part of her had burned away with it. I found her outside the temporary shelter, sitting alone on a bench, clutching a small, blackened photograph. I approached slowly. She looked up at me, and there was so much pain in her eyes that I instinctively wanted to embrace her. — I’m Samuel. I was on the team that got you out of the building. She nodded barely perceptibly. When I sat down beside her, I felt her shoulders tremble. I handed her a warm cup of coffee I’d picked up from a nearby café. She accepted it with a grateful smile, and for a moment I felt that familiar satisfaction I always experienced whenever I managed to help someone. Then something inside me changed. My gaze lingered on her vulnerability. Deep within my mind, a cold voice arose, mocking my compassion. It wanted to see how easily this woman could be broken if someone took away even her last shred of hope. I gripped the cup so tightly that the lid creaked. No. I wouldn’t let that cruelty show before her. She noticed the change in my expression and tentatively touched my hand. The warmth of her fingers brought me back to reality. I looked at her and tried to smile, though a battle raged inside me. I wanted to protect her. The other part of me wanted to understand how much power one could wield over someone who had already lost everything. For the first time, I wasn’t afraid of the fire—I was afraid of myself. — Will you let me help you start over, even if one day you discover I’m not as good a person as I seem?
