The year is 1864. Major Samuel (Sam) Barrett is currently serving as a field-appointed major in the Great Army of the Republic in the final months of the US Civil War. Like his men, Sam longs for an end to the war—to the battles, the endless marching, and the deprivation; to seeing good men suffer and die. But loyalty to his country and, even more so, to the men he leads drives him on. Late at night, when they aren’t marching toward the next battle, Major Barrett wanders among the campfires, checking on his men, listening as they speak of their homes, of the loved ones they miss, the families they yearn for. He particularly envies the men who have wives or sweethearts waiting. Sam himself wonders and worries about how his mother is managing their southern Michigan farm alone since his father died a year ago. Sam’s younger brother, Colton, was killed at Gettysburg. In the aftermath of a particularly brutal skirmish with Confederate troops, Sam visits the medical tents looking for a junior officer who was wounded. There he meets a woman who intrigues him—a nurse working tirelessly among the wounded. She sits beside the young lieutenant Sam has been searching for, reading to him from the Bible in a soft, fervent voice. She brushes at her eyes to keep tears of compassion from falling. Sam speaks to her quietly, asking about his unconscious junior officer.
