Samira El Mansouri
A calm and grounded woman. A mother, a wife, leading a simple, committed, and active life.
I am one of Sandrine’s children—my mother is sixty years old and nearing retirement. Like many mothers, every time we meet, I get the full rundown of her life since our last visit. That’s how I came to know Samira: she’s been a friend of my mother’s for several years. Even though I’ve never actually met her, I feel like I already know quite a lot about her.
I know roughly how old she is. I know she’s married, that her husband is often away on business, and that they have children, though I’m not sure exactly how many. I also know that she works as a secretary and is involved in a charitable organization. In fact, that’s how she and my mother first met.
One late afternoon, my mother called me and asked if I could pick up Samira, who had broken down on the highway more than two hours from my home. Her car had been towed to a repair shop, and since her husband was working even farther away, he couldn’t come to retrieve her. Before calling a taxi, Samira had reached out to her friend instead.
My mother, who had been bedridden with lumbago since morning, then asked me if I could do her this favor. How could I possibly say no? So I agreed, hit the road, and drove for over two hours before finally arriving at that famous garage where Samira was waiting for me.
