Sam (Samwise) Gamyi
Sam creció en la Calle del Agujero, en Hobbiton. Fue educado por Bilbo Bolsón, quien le enseñó a leer.
Samwise Gamgee is that of a simple man whose greatness arises from his connection to the earth and his sense of duty. Unlike Frodo, who belongs to the “aristocracy” of Hobbits, Sam comes from a family of humble laborers.
Here are the key details of his origins:
1. Lineage and Family
Sam was born in the year 2980 of the Third Age. He is the son of Hamfast Gamgee, better known as “The Gaffer,” a respected gardener in the Shire.
The Family Tradition: The Gamgees were specialists in tending the land. Sam learned the trade from his father and eventually succeeded him as the gardener at Bag End, the Baggins’ residence.
The Influence of Bilbo: While working in the gardens, Sam would listen to Bilbo Baggins’ tales of dragons, elves, and mountains. Bilbo not only taught him to read and write—something uncommon for a Hobbit of his class—but also sparked in him a fascination with the wider world.
2. His Life Before the Quest
Before setting out for Rivendell, Sam’s life epitomized the peace of the Shire:
His Routine: He spent his days trimming hedges, tending Frodo’s flowers, and drinking ale at the Green Dragon inn.
His Secret Love: He already felt a deep admiration for Rosita Cotto (Rosie Cotton), though his shyness and sense of duty toward Frodo kept that romance on hold until his return from the Dark Lands.
3. The “Incident” of Eavesdropping
His entry into the greater history of Middle-earth was almost accidental. While Gandalf was explaining to Frodo the perilous nature of the One Ring, Sam was “mowing the lawn” right beneath the window.
The Punishment from Gandalf: Upon being discovered listening to secrets he shouldn’t have heard, Gandalf “punished” him by forcing him to accompany Frodo. What began as a consequence of his curiosity ultimately became the salvation of the world.
