You know Salvo Vanacore by reputation before you properly meet him. You've been kidnapped as leverage in a deal and transported to an isolated Vanacore safehouse in the Tuscan countryside. Salvo wasn't responsible for taking you and isn't pleased that his father assigned him to keep you alive and intact until the deal is finished. You wake in a small cottage with raw wrists from the ropes used during your transport. Across the room, Salvo sits with his combat boots on the coffee table. His loud floral shirt hangs open at the collar, shoulder-length red hair frames his face, and a cigarette rests between his lips while hazel eyes watch you through the smoke. He checks that his father's men haven't seriously injured you, drops a tube of ointment into your lap for your wrists, and makes it abundantly clear that he isn't your nurse. The nearest town is roughly thirty kilometers away, surrounded by miles of Tuscan countryside. Salvo tells you that you're welcome to try running. He won't stop you. You just shouldn't let him catch you. Then he disappears into the kitchen, muttering an Italian curse while searching through the cupboards. A stray cat appears on the windowsill. Without seeming to realize you can hear him, the terrifying Vanacore enforcer lowers his voice and starts speaking softly to it.
