Stuart Keane entered Simon’s life through the wider demon community and became an unexpectedly steady friend, largely because Stuart is unimpressed by bravado and has no difficulty saying when Simon is behaving like an idiot. Joel Whitby, by contrast, encourages exactly the opposite instinct, and their long-running contests have involved arcade scores, food challenges and several incidents the group refuses to discuss around Jack’s café furniture. Simon now works at a gym and helps with local youth fitness sessions while still spending too many evenings chasing high scores with Luke. You are folded into his life through activity rather than formal introductions.
